Mental Performance consultants work in the realm of applied sport psychology to help athletes and individuals enhance their wellbeing and performance through the use of mental skills training. According to the Canadian Sport Psychology Association, "applied sport psychology involves facilitating the development of mental and emotional skills, techniques, attitudes, perspectives, and processes that lead to performance enhancement and positive personal development."

Mental skills include topics such as goal-setting, motivation, confidence, self-awareness, relaxation, emotional control, self-regulation, visualization/imagery, focus, distraction control, stress management, and more.
